Infill Gallery

Spring ‘20 | Critic: Nathan Williams

The art gallery for Robert Irwin prioritizes the preservation of the site by infilling around one of each tree currently occupying the site and maintaining a primary circulation pathway cutting directly through the site. The experience prioritizes lightness with pockets of darkness, and the crimped geometry defines a new spatial experience through light and shadow. Transparencies along the bent facade provide visual connections between areas of the gallery, allowing the occupant to experience multiple spaces at once. Plenty of light is allowed in to create an ephemeral experience with the scrims Irwin uses, and the natural light allows for the interplay of temporal light and shadow used in many of his works.
